The bill sponsor said it is not perfect and is likely to change, but encouraged senators to vote for it since it was the only path left to restoring the initiative process. The new bill is estimated to require nearly a quarter of a million. In the previous law, less than 110,000 signatures were needed. Senate Bill 2638 and the accompanying Senate Concurrent Resolution 533, in their current forms, would significantly raise the bar for initiatives to reach the ballot, compared to the law struck down by the court. This year, no ballot initiative bill reached the House floor, but the Senate did pass a version that remains alive. Last session, the Senate and the House failed to agree on a bill that would reinstate it, with the House version largely mirroring the previous law and the Senate version increasing requirements to get something on the ballot. ![]() The ability for Mississippi voters to directly pass legislation was eliminated in 2021 when the state Supreme Court struck it down due to outdated language in the law. ![]()
